護(hù)軌是指在軌道上鋼軌內(nèi)側(cè)加鋪的不承受車輪豎直荷載的鋼軌。按鋪設(shè)地點不同有不同的作用。在道岔轍叉處的護(hù)軌，鋪在轍叉有害空間相對的鋼軌內(nèi)側(cè)，引導(dǎo)車輪通過有害空間，避免撞擊叉心尖端，在橋梁上的護(hù)軌可防止已脫軌的車輛撞擊橋梁或墜于橋下；在小半徑曲線上在內(nèi)軌里側(cè)鋪設(shè)護(hù)軌，可減少外軌側(cè)面磨耗。
